Evaluation of the temporal dynamics of the vegetation cover of the Salcedo Canton through the use of satellite images from the year 2000 to 2020
Abstract
Research related to progressive changes in vegetation cover and land use is increasingly important in environmental research since it allows the loss or gain of vegetation cover to be evaluated over time. Furthermore, in recent decades, anthropogenic activities have become the main problem in the transformation of ecosystems, modifying or destroying them in order to develop their activities. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the temporal dynamics of the vegetation cover of the Salcedo canton from 2000 to 2020. The study was carried out based on multispectral satellite images Landsat 7 ETM+, 8 OLI and sentinel 2, the methodology applied to The classification of the vegetation cover is supervised, using the maximum likelihood algorithm in the QGIS program. In addition, the classification was validated through training areas and verifications taken in the field, which identified seven covers: forest, bare soils, moorland. , agricultural mosaic, urban areas, rivers or lakes, bushes and thickets, in this way the changes in the vegetation cover were evaluated, in the same way a transition matrix was prepared where the changes that occurred every two periods were analyzed with the purpose of identifying and quantify the changes that have occurred within the study area. Therefore, the results indicate that from 2001 to 2020 the Salcedo canton has suffered progressive changes in the vegetation cover, one of the most significant changes is the loss of the moors and the increase in agricultural mosaics, having that by the year In 2020, the moorland has decreased by 5,812.84 hectares and the agricultural mosaic has increased by 12,216.43 hectares more than in 2001.
